"SWEET MERMAID" escapes
David Suzuki's Playlist for the Planet
fishing net!
posted September 2nd, 2010
Dear
friends...
It seems that my "Sweet Mermaid"
was too wiley for Mr. Suzuki. All he was able to catch for
his
Playlist for the Planet Ontario finalists were
some Feather, Fur and Fins, and the odd sparrow or
two. Such is the fate when dragging a net fathoms deep.
Thank you to everyone for voting, helping spread
the word, and not to mention, sharing your kind words of
encouragement. There are some truly worthwhile environmental
anthems that made it to the final round, so please do
VOTE for
your favourite.
In the meantime, I have a
new album to harvest: MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN. You can
preview the tracks
right here.
Let me know what you think!

David
Suzuki's Playlist for the Planet
posted August 20th, 2010
Mr. Suzuki is looking to put together songs for a Playlist for the Planet. I figured that although my "Sweet Mermaid" is mostly (admittedly) a love song, it is indeed an ode as well to what I believe is one of the last remaining places on earth where humans and nature continue to frolic in a passionate lover's tryst: the mythical shores of New Zealand. So I've thrown it into the ring, so to speak, in hopes it will remind people to do more than just wax poetic about the environment, but rather poetically wax themselves with the environment.
You can listen to and vote every day for "Sweet
Mermaid" on the CBC Radio 3 website (you need to
do a free sign-up but it's quick and painless):

NEW ALBUM:
MIDNIGHT IN
THE GARDEN
posted August 15th, 2010
After a six year hibernation,
Bryce Thomas re-awakens with a new album
exploring the earthy depths of love, life and
lingering libations. The 9 tracks were written,
performed, recorded, and produced by Bryce
during late-night hours while babies slept,
sometime between June 2008 and October 2009.
As
Bryce admits, "Midnight in the Garden
came about following a rather long period of
creative drought. At the time it was as though
being a new father had me channelling all my
expressive energy directly into my children.
Guitars, piano and drums became rather dusty."
Fortunately, the midnight in the garden of his
creativity began to sprout something new. It
began with a little tune called Dig My Own
Grave, which bloomed fully formed in a
single evening and is the only song on the new
album to not have any extensive revisions or
embellishments after the fact.
Some of the other songs, such as Gone,
Powder Blue, and Good Things, were in
fact intended to be on Bryce's debut album ONCE
WERE EXPLORERS, while newer songs, including
Venezia, Wanderlust, Groove Back
On and the title track, Midnight in the
Garden, were welcome surprises that took
root and grew in leaps and bounds. And yes,
according to Bryce, You and Me was sung
with tongue firmly in cheek.
The album is
primed for release on iTunes later this fall.
